Willowbank School of Restoration Arts
The Willowbank Geosite is situated on an ancient riverbank overlooking the beautiful historic village of Queenston and the mighty Niagara River. The Geosite has International Significance as an ancient indigenous meeting place, active portage route and its proximity to a major battle area during the War of 1812. Archaeological studies have revealed unique indigenous artifacts dating back over 9,000 years as well as provided clear evidence of the existence of 5,000 year old ritual sites on the property. More recent activity, such as clusters of encampments from the War of 1812 where Indigenous tribal nations fought side by side with British and militia soldiers, have been documented. This idyllic setting is the modern-day home of the Willowbank School of Restoration Arts and the Centre for Cultural Landscapes. With assistance from the Geopark, Willowbank will offer a “Cultural Landscapes” continuing education curriculum that will investigate how human culture is shaped by geology and other aspects of the natural environment.
