Geohikes & Routes

Explore Niagara’s geology from anywhere through a growing collection of virtual GeoHikes and self-guided experiences.

Created in partnership with the APGO Education Foundation, McMaster University, and Niagara Geopark, these resources bring the region’s geological story to life through accessible, place-based learning.

Ready to explore? Click the image or link to the right to begin your virtual hike. Each Geohike will open in a new window, making it easy to explore while keeping your place on the Niagara Geopark website.

You can also download the Geohike brochure for a helpful overview before you begin.

Whether you are planning an in-person visit, supporting classroom learning, or exploring from home, Virtual GeoHikes offer a meaningful way to connect with Niagara beyond the surface—across escarpments, trails, shorelines, waterways, and geosites throughout the region.

Before You Go

To make the most of your Geohike, consider bringing sturdy shoes or hiking boots, a hand lens or magnifying glass, a notebook and pen, a camera or phone for photos, and clothing suited to the weather.

We encourage you to take pictures, not samples. Please leave rock hammers and collecting tools at home and help protect the places you explore.

Safety First

As with any outdoor experience, it is important to explore with care. Stay on marked trails, avoid climbing on outcrops, and keep a safe distance from roads and steep edges. Whenever possible, visit sites with another person and be prepared for changing weather and trail conditions.
